BAROSSA TIMETRAVELLER - "Taste History"

Enjoy a unique taste of the South Australia's rich cultural and social history through this amazing tour designed by wine lovers for wine lovers. As you sample some of the greatest wines Australia has to offer, you'll be taken behind the scenes at family owned wineries and walk among some of the oldest vines in the world. Through the window of wine you'll begin to unravel the history and secrets of Australia's most famous and historic region. Maximum 6 people.

Our Time Traveller Tastings are a unique experience that connect you directly with the people who make the wine today, their ancestors who shaped the region and the ancient vines who have stood witness to almost two centuries of winemaking history.

Let the wines you taste and the people you meet transport you on a journey back through the centuries:

1836 George Fife Angas the "founder of South Australia" establishes the South Australia Company. We meet his sixth generation descendants, who run an organic lamb farm and make their own wine.

1843 The Freedom Vineyard is planted with what is now the worlds oldest Shiraz. We meet the owner, learn about his family history and walk though the ancient vines.

1848 The Cirillo "1850" Grenache vineyard was planted, now the oldest producing Grenache vines in the world. We'll walk through the amazing vineyard on pure white beach sand, where Marco Cirillo will show us the secret vineyard techniques passed down from his father that keeps the ancient vines alive.

1860s Henschke's Hill of Grace vineyard was planted by German settlers. We visit Australia's "most sacred viticultural site", meet the fifth generation custodians for a private tour and taste the remarkable wine.

1878 Benno Seppeltsfield lays down the first barrel of port with the instruction that it should not be opened for 100 years. Benno's instructions were followed and every year since a barrel has been laid and only opened after 100 years. Explore the Centenary Cellar and taste the wine from your birth year, truly a taste of history.

McLaren Vale - Where Shiraz meets the sea

McLaren Vale is one of the most beautiful wine regions in Australia as well as being the leading region for organic and sustainable winemaking, no surprise as many of the winemakers live in the middle of their vineyards and winemaking is simply part of their environment and community. Blessed with a Mediterranean climate, the landscape is one of rolling hills with olive groves dotted in between the vineyards with the backdrop of the blue waters of the Gulf of St Vincent and it's white sand beaches. Your local expert tour guide will introduce you to the leading winemakers of the district, often going behind the scenes to boutique wineries normally only open to friends and family. You’ll enjoy some sensational wines from the Australian classics such as Shiraz and Grenache along with some of the newer “alternative” varieties that McLaren Vale is becoming famous for, such as Tempranillo, Nero d’Avola and Fiano, and sample some delicious Mediterranean inspired food along the way.

Winery visits will include the following, based on the availability of the owners and winemakers on the day: Battle of Bosworth, Bekkers, Samuels Gorge, Yangarra, Gemtree, Inkwell, Brash Higgins, Olivers Tarranga, d’Arenberg and Wirra Wirra. Maximum 8 people
